DM Lieberman: ‘Israel has no intention of getting involved in the Syria conflict’

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said, during a meeting with ambassadors of European Union member states, that Israel’s position with regard to the conflict in Syria was that it has no intention of getting involved in the civil war, but strictly intervenes in cases that look out for its own security interests, including the preventing of sophisticated weaponry from being transferred from Syria, some of which originates in Iran and some from Assad’s military, to the Shi’ite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The comments by the Israeli top defense official came against the backdrop of a strike yesterday on a military airfield near Damascus, which Syrian officials said was conducted by Israel. According to the officials, Israel fired a surface-to-surface missile toward the airport, an allegation the Israeli military neither denied nor confirmed.
