EU Foreign Policy Chief reaffirms commitment to two-state solution with Jerusalem as a joint capital

Taking the Palestinian narrative into account, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini condemned Trump’s announcement as counterproductive to peace, and reiterated the Union’s position, in which only a two-state solution with Jerusalem as a joint capital for both Israel and Palestinian can bring about an end to the decades old conflict. The EU Foreign Policy Chief said, “President Trump’s announcement on Jerusalem has a very worrying potential impact. It is a very fragile context and the announcement has the potential to send us backwards to even darker times than the ones we are already living in. The European Union has a clear and united position: we believe that only realistic solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine is based on two states and with Jerusalem as the capital of both the state of Israel and the state of Palestine,” she emphasized.

When asked to respond to a call by the leader of the Islamist Hamas organization, which urged the Palestinians to reignite a violent uprising against Israel, the EU’s top diplomat emphasized that all demonstrations and all reactions to Washington’s declaration must be peaceful, warning that any conflagration can only worsen the situation and push an aspired solution further from reality.
