Israel closes border-crossing with Gaza in response to escalation

The IDF announced that “due to the security events and in accordance with security assessments” Israel decided to close the Kerem Shalom crossing, which is the main passage point for goods entering the Gaza Strip, as well as the Erez pedestrian crossing. An Israeli security official told TV7 that the decision to close the crossing came after more than 15 rockets were fired toward Israel in less than a week, which is half the amount of the number of rockets that were directed at Israel by Palestinian Islamists since the last conflict in Gaza in 2014, which amounted to 40 rockets in total. The official emphasized that the Hamas organization, which controls the Palestinian enclave, as well as the other Islamist groups operating in Gaza must understand that they are fully responsible for the well-being of the residents of the Palestinian enclave, whom are subject to difficult humanitarian living conditions. The official further warned that “By firing rockets toward the Jewish state, the humanitarian situation will continue to deteriorate and may well lead to another conflagration with Israel that would exert a heavy toll from everyone in the Gaza Strip.”
