Trump-Putin to discuss an Iranian withdrawal from Syria

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to hold a summit on the 15th of July, which according to reports will take place in the Finnish capital, Helsinki. Among others, the two leaders are expected to discuss the war in Syria, including an American demand for a full Iranian withdrawal from the war-torn-country.

According to a report published by the London-based Al-Hayat daily, “Washington is willing to accept a situation in which Syrian President Bashar Assad would remain in power after regaining control of all of Syria,” in exchange for an Iranian withdrawal that will protect two of the United States’ main regional allies, Jordan and Israel.

Al-Hayat’s report further quoted a Western diplomat, noting that “The U.S. will give Israel the green light to attack any Iranian presence in Syria wherever and however Israel wants to.”
