U.N. talks on Syria to be held in Geneva, Nov. 28th

The United Nations’ deputy special envoy to Syria, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, announced a new round of talks in Geneva that will discuss governance, fighting terrorism, a new constitution for the war-torn country, as well as elections, which is a key demand of the Syrian opposition. Talks are scheduled to start on the 28th of November, with senior UN envoy Staffan de Mistura announcing on Saturday that a delegation representing the Syrian opposition will be invited, that after division among the opposition groups has made it increasingly challenging to establish a united ‘negotiating-front’, a reality that threatened to torpedo a much-needed political process to end the bloody conflict. After a summit of the Syrian opposition concluded in Saudi Arabia, the Syrian opposition announced in a press conference that it was ready to negotiate only under the auspices of the United Nations, and was willing to discuss all topics on the agenda, so-long as the international community commit – including Russia and the Damascus government – to adhering to already agreed-upon international resolutions.
