France, Jordan and Britain call on the U.S. to present its Israeli-Palestinian peace plan

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a joint press conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah, called on the United States to present its plans regarding a peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, while emphasizing that only through direct negotiations peace can be achieved. President Macron also reiterated his support for a two-state solution and for partitioning Jerusalem, which he stressed should eventually become a joint capital of Israel and a future Palestinian state.

King Abdullah joined the call for Washington’s imminent presentation of a peace plan, emphasizing that hope continues to prevail. Nevertheless, the Jordanian King warned that peace would not be possible without a solution for the issue of Jerusalem, and called upon Israel to refrain from making changes on the ground, so as to leave hope for the future. King Abdullah said, “We have hope that there is a movement forward. We are in the process of waiting to hear what the plan is, and where that takes us. So we all have to hope and pray that actually over the next two months, our American colleagues will articulate the next phase of this challenge, and hopefully to be able to build on that,” the Jordanian monarch said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation last night with British Prime Minister Theresa May about ways of advancing the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. May’s spokesperson revealed that the British prime minister had urged the American president to present his peace plan as soon as possible, after having announced his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
