Russia says it aids UNDOF to resume peacekeeping mandate along Israel-Syria border

Russia says it is aiding the United Nation to resume its peacekeeping operations on the Syrian-side of the Golan Heights.

After Syrian government forces recaptured the country’s borders with Israel a, Russia deployed four outposts along the demilitarized zone east of the Golan Heights, while announcing its plan to add four more outposts in the region.

The Russian military said its deployment along the Syrian armistice line with Israel, aims to maintain stability in the region while mediating the decades-long hostilities between the region’s arch-foes.

“The Russian military police here are coordinating with the UN peacekeepers on the Golan Heights, with the main purpose to fully resume the operations of the peacekeeping troops on the Golan Heights. We have forwarded all the information in our hands to the UN peacekeeping representatives, who are to analyze it. I believe they will soon chart out their own roadmap step by step.” / “We will provide all possible assistance to the UN mission, to enable the UN peacekeepers’ flags to reappear at all the outposts, and fully resume their operations in the demilitarized zone. Once they deem they can get the job done without us, we will withdraw from this place,” Sergei Kuralenko, Russia’s Forces in Syria said.

In towns close to the demilitarized zone, Russian and Syrian military police vehicles were seen carrying out joint patrols to ensure security.
