Despite the “central” in CENTCOM’s name, American foreign policy has been fixated on other regions – the Atlantic and the Pacific, the Soviet Union and Communist China – until it was dragged into the Middle East by Arabian Gulf wars.

In more recent years, successive administrations talked of “pivoting” elsewhere, and Ukraine and Taiwan seemingly bolster this trend, but the Gaza War and now the Israeli-Iranian conflict has put the United States back in a leading and perhaps singular position in the region. Is this real or imaginary, lasting or temporary, a throne or a trap?
