IDF strikes Syria in response to errant mortar fire

A mortar shell exploded in Israel’s northern Golan Heights last night, east of the border-fence near the Syrian city of Quneitra. No injuries or damage were reported. Israeli defense officials said the incident was likely the result of errant fire from ongoing battles between Islamist militants and regime forces. Nevertheless, the Israeli military carried out a precision artillery strike on a Syrian military position, from which the mortar was fired. The IDF Spokesperson’s unit released a statement in which it reiterated that it “views the Syrian civil regime as responsible for all that happens on its territory and will not tolerate any attempt to harm the sovereignty of the state of Israel or the security of its citizens.” The Syria military did not immediately respond to TV7’s request for comment.
