Palestinian President Abbas seeks Moscow’s mediation amid attempts to bypass Washington

A Palestinian official confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas are planning to discuss a possible new mediation-mechanism for resolving the Israeli Palestinian conflict – that after the Palestinians deemed Washington as “untrustworthy.” Spokesman for the Palestinian leader’s Fatah faction, Nasser al-Qudwa said the Palestinian leadership finds it imperative to establish a new mechanism that will by-pass what the Palestinian perceive as “Washington’s bias” toward them. Al Qudwa said, “I think that the topic about urging the international community to establish a new mechanism to take care of the possible political process aiming to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will be discussed because it is an important topic for all of the international parties,” the Fatah spokesman announced.

The discussion on a new mediation-mechanism is scheduled to take place when Putin and Abbas will meet in the Russian resort city of Sochi, on 12th of February.

An Israeli official responded to the Palestinian attempt to bypass the United States, emphasizing that there is no alternative to Washington’s mediation, which is a key component to any political process that is viable to succeed. The official further stated to TV7 that the Palestinian attempt to bypass the Americans clearly indicates their unwillingness to genuinely work toward a just solution, that would end decades of bloodshed between the Palestinian people and the Jewish state.
