A senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced the Islamic Republic’s vow to avenge Monday’s (December 23) missile strikes in Syria, that have widely been attributed to Israel.
Speaking to Russia’s state-funded RT channel, Khamenei’s political advisor Ali Akbar Velayati said that Israel “will regret” its actions against Iranian assets in the Arab Republic.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that three foreign nationals – believed to be Iranian combatants – were killed in an attack south of Damascus. Multiple Iranian weapons depots in the nearby town of Sayyidah Zaynab were also targeted, according to reports by Lebanon’s Al Akhbar daily newspaper.
Israel has made no public comments regarding allegations related to this week’s attack in the neighboring country of Syria; although in recent years the IDF has launched hundreds of strikes to prevent Iranian attempts to establish a permanent base just over the northern frontier, from which or its Islamist allies can attack the Jewish State.
